Snare Setup

To set your snare drum up just follow the steps outlined below.

  • Start off by tightening the bottom head until you have equal tension across all lugs.

  • Take the snare cords that hold the snare wires on the bottom, and loosen them from the throw-off and the butt plate.

  • Back off the adjustment knob on the throw-off so that the body is parallel with the side of the snare shell.

  • With the bottom head facing up, center the snare wire over the bottom head, and tighten the snare cord to the butt plate first, then the throw-off.

  • Tighten the top head ntil you get that bright attack sound that is associated with snare drums (making sure you have equal tension on all lugs).

  • Fine-tune the adjustment knob on the throw off so you get an even buzzing sound. Don’t make the snares too tight, otherwise you will end up chocking the drum.

  • Finalize the tuning to meet your specific needs, then have fun!
Remember, most of the time you will want the snare to have a sharp attack, and a nice crack. If you want the snare to have a deeper sound without losing the attack, loosen the bottom lugs about 1/2 a turn, or until you get the sound you are looking for.
